The basics

1. What are Traumeel S ampoules?

A homeopathic combination remedy by Heel in single-dose glass ampoules, also called Traumeel S Solution or Traumeel S Ampullen. See our introduction.

2. What is in them?

Fourteen plant and mineral ingredients, including arnica, calendula, chamomilla, belladonna, echinacea, hamamelis and yarrow. Full list: ingredient guide.

3. What are they traditionally used for?

The label lists injuries such as sprains and bruises, swelling of soft tissues, and inflammatory or wear-related complaints of the support and mobility apparatus.

4. Is Traumeel a painkiller?

No. It is a homeopathic remedy used traditionally. If you are in significant pain, see a doctor.

5. Who makes it?

Heel, the German company founded around Dr Reckeweg's work. See about Heel.

Taking the ampoules

6. Can you take the ampoules orally?

Yes: the directions say to break the ampoule at the marker, tap it into a glass of water and take it with water over 15 to 20 minutes.

7. How many ampoules a day?

Normal dosage is 1 ampoule every 3 days. In acute disorders, 1 ampoule a day. Follow your box and ask your practitioner for a personal schedule.

8. Should I take it with food?

No. Take it outside of food, about 10 to 15 minutes before or after.

9. Can I take it in a smoothie or tea?

The directions say a glass of water. Stick to that.

10. What if I miss a day?

Carry on with the next one as usual and do not double up.

11. Are other routes possible?

Other methods of use, including injection (i.m., s.c., i.d., i.v.), are for trained individuals, e.g. practitioners.

Safety and special groups

12. Can children take Traumeel ampoules?

For the 2.2 ml ampoule, our product page quotes Heel's Austrian patient leaflet, which gives doses by age: ages 2 to 5, half an ampoule (1.1 ml); ages 6 to 11, about two thirds of an ampoule (approx. 1.5 ml); ages 12 and over, one ampoule. These are 1 to 3 times a week, or daily for 3 days in acute cases, and use under 2 years is not recommended. Heel's German product information for the same ampoule advises against use under 12 because there is not enough documented experience. The 5 ml pages give no children's dosage. If unsure, ask your practitioner. See pregnancy and kids.

13. Is it safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Ask your practitioner or doctor before use.

14. Is it safe with other medicines?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist everything you take, including homeopathics. See Traumeel with other medicines.

15. What if I am allergic to daisies or arnica?

Several ingredients belong to the daisy family. Ask your practitioner before use.

16. Can older people use it?

Many do, usually with their practitioner's guidance. See ampoules and active ageing.

17. What if symptoms get worse?

Stop and see a doctor. Severe, persistent or worsening symptoms need medical assessment.

Sizes, boxes and storage

18. What is the difference between the 2.2 ml and 5 ml ampoules?

Volume, label amounts and potency figures. See 2.2 ml versus 5 ml.

19. Which box should I buy?

10 is a good start; 100 or 3 x 100 suits regular users. See which box.

20. How should I store them?

Keep them in the original box and out of children's reach. For the 2.2 ml ampoules, the manufacturer states that no special storage conditions are required. Do not use after the expiry date on the carton and ampoule. See storing and opening ampoules.

21. Can I take them on a plane?

Rules vary by airline and country, so check before you travel and keep them in their box with documents if possible. See the travel kit guide.

Other forms and combinations

22. How do ampoules compare with tablets, gel and drops?

Different formats suit different situations. See which form.

23. Can I use Traumeel with Zeel?

Many people do. See Traumeel and Zeel together.

24. Is it better than arnica?

They are different: arnica is one ingredient in Traumeel. See Traumeel versus arnica.
