Traumeel Ampoules, Tablets, Gel, Ointment or Drops: Which Form?

Educational information on traditional homeopathic use only. Not medical advice.

Traumeel comes in more shapes than almost any other homeopathic remedy: ampoules, tablets, drops, a gel and an ointment. They share a family name but differ in how you use them, how you carry them and how they suit different moments. This guide helps you work out which form is the better fit for your situation. Directions differ by product, so always read the page and box for the form you choose.

Ampoules Tablets Gel

The forms in a line each

  • Ampoules: single-dose glass vials, tapped into a glass of water and taken by mouth. Sizes 2.2 ml and 5 ml.
  • Tablets: small tablets in boxes of 50 or 250, taken by mouth.
  • Drops: liquid in 30 ml and 100 ml bottles.
  • Gel: a topical gel in tubes, for applying to the skin over the sore area.
  • Ointment: a topical ointment (cream-like) in tubes.

When people choose ampoules

Ampoules tend to be chosen when someone wants a measured, single dose and likes the ritual of one-at-a-time use. They are popular with practitioners because each vial is the same amount every time, which makes it easy to keep a record. Ampoules are also practical when you want a dose without having to count tablets or measure drops. The label advises taking them in water, slowly, outside of food. Other methods of use, including injection (i.m., s.c., i.d., i.v.), are for trained individuals, e.g. practitioners.

On the downside, glass needs careful handling, so ampoules are less convenient for very young children and for rattling around in a gym bag unprotected (see storing and carrying ampoules).

When people choose tablets or drops

Tablets are the easy, pocket-friendly choice for travel and for regular use. Drops let you adjust the amount, which some people find helpful, and are a common choice for those who prefer a liquid but do not want glass. If you are choosing between these, our article how to use Traumeel drops, tablets or gel and the comparison gel versus tablets versus drops are good next reads.

When people choose gel or ointment

Gel and ointment are applied to the skin over a sore area, so many people pick them for a clearly localised bump, strain or stiff joint. Gel is lighter and absorbs readily; ointment has a richer, creamier feel. Neither is taken by mouth. Do not apply them to broken skin or near the eyes, and stop if irritation develops.

Using more than one form

It is common to combine an oral form (ampoules or tablets) with a topical one (gel or ointment) when an area is sore. That approach appears in several of our existing articles, such as a rolled or sprained ankle. Combining forms should be done under a practitioner's guidance if you are taking other medicines or are unsure.

Quick chooser

  • I want single measured doses for myself or patients: ampoules.
  • I want something compact for travel: tablets, or ampoules in a hard case.
  • I want to put something directly on a sore spot: gel or ointment.
  • I prefer a liquid I can measure myself: drops.
  • It is for a child: ask a practitioner first.

Cautions

These are traditional homeopathic products, not a substitute for medical care. Ask your practitioner or doctor before use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or childhood, or alongside regular medicines. Seek medical attention for severe, persistent or worsening symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

Is the formula identical in every form?

Not necessarily. The forms are separate products with their own composition lists, so read each page. See ingredients explained for the ampoule list.

Do I need ampoules if I already use the gel?

That is a personal choice. Many people use both; ask your practitioner if you are unsure.

Which is best for travel?

Tablets are simplest; ampoules travel well in a hard case. See the travel kit guide.

Are ampoules stronger?

We do not describe them that way. Each product has its own label and directions.
