Traumeel S Ampoules Explained: What They Are and How They Came About

Educational information on traditional homeopathic use only. Not medical advice.

If you have spent any time looking at natural remedies for knocks, strains and sore joints, you will have met Traumeel. The gel and tablets are the best-known forms, but many practitioners, sports therapists and long-term users prefer the ampoules. This guide explains, in plain English, what Traumeel S ampoules are, where the formula comes from, what sizes we stock and how the label says they are taken.

What are Traumeel S ampoules?

Traumeel S ampoules are a liquid homeopathic combination remedy made by Heel. Each small glass ampoule holds a measured dose of a blend of plant and mineral ingredients in homeopathic dilution. On our product pages the same product is also called Traumeel S Solution, and in German Traumeel S Ampullen, so you may see any of those names on a box or a search result.

The formula is a "combination" remedy, meaning it brings together several single homeopathic ingredients in one product rather than relying on one. Fourteen ingredients are listed on the label, including arnica, calendula, chamomilla, belladonna, echinacea, hamamelis and yarrow (millefolium). We go through them one by one in our ingredient-by-ingredient guide.

Where does Traumeel come from?

Traumeel was developed by the German company Heel, founded by the physician Dr Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg. Reckeweg built his work around an idea he called homotoxicology, a way of looking at illness and recovery that he combined with homeopathic medicines. Heel's combination remedies, often sold in matching ampoule, tablet and drop forms, grew out of that tradition. If you enjoy the background, our existing articles on Heel and Dr Reckeweg and understanding homotoxicology tell the story in more depth.

The "S" in Traumeel S is simply part of the product name used on the ampoule and ointment versions. It is not something you need to decode before buying.

What is it traditionally used for?

Our product pages reproduce the traditional indications for the ampoules. They describe use for injuries such as sprains, dislocations, contusions and bruising, post-operative and post-traumatic swelling of the soft tissues, and inflammatory or wear-related complaints of the support and mobility apparatus, such as tendon sheath, elbow and bursa problems. The label also mentions local injuries, swollen joints and tender or inflamed areas.

It is worth being clear about what that means. These are traditional homeopathic indications, not a promise of any result, and Traumeel is not a replacement for assessment or treatment by a doctor. A suspected fracture, a joint that cannot bear weight, a head injury or any symptom that is severe, getting worse or not settling needs proper medical attention first.

How are the ampoules taken?

The directions printed on our pages are short. You break the ampoule at the marker, tap the contents into a glass of water and take it with water over 15 to 20 minutes, outside of food (10 to 15 minutes before or after). Other methods of use, including injection (i.m., s.c., i.d., i.v.), are for trained individuals, e.g. practitioners.

The normal dosage is 1 ampoule every 3 days. In acute disorders, 1 ampoule a day. Always follow the directions printed on the box you receive. Our dedicated guide to taking the ampoules by mouth goes through this step by step.

Which sizes do we stock?

If you are unsure which to pick, read 2.2 ml versus 5 ml and which box size to choose.

Who should be careful?

Homeopathic remedies are generally gentle, but a few sensible cautions apply. Ask your practitioner or doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if the ampoules are for a child, if you take regular medication, or if you have a known allergy to plants in the daisy family (arnica, calendula, chamomile, yarrow and echinacea all belong to it). Stop and seek advice if you notice any unwanted reaction. Our article on Traumeel in pregnancy and for children covers this in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Are Traumeel S ampoules the same as Traumeel S Solution?

Yes. On our pages the ampoules are also called Traumeel S Solution, and in German Traumeel S Ampullen.

Do I have to swallow the ampoule contents?

The label directions describe tapping the contents into a glass of water and taking it by mouth over 15 to 20 minutes. Never swallow the glass itself, and open ampoules with care (see our guide to opening and storing ampoules).

Is it only for athletes?

No. The traditional indications cover everyday knocks, bruises and joint complaints as well as sporting injuries. Many people simply keep a small box at home.

Can I use it with other Traumeel forms?

Many people do combine forms, for example ampoules with the gel or ointment. See which form to choose, and ask your practitioner if you are unsure.
