Traumeel S Ampoules for Active Ageing: Gentle Support for Stiff, Sore Joints

Educational information on traditional homeopathic use only. Not medical advice.

Growing older does not have to mean slowing down, but it does tend to mean that a knock takes longer to forget, joints grumble after a good walk, and the medicine cabinet fills up. Many older adults like homeopathic remedies precisely because they are gentle and sit comfortably alongside a busy routine. This guide looks at how Traumeel S ampoules are traditionally used by active older people, and what extra care is worth taking.

Everyday situations where people reach for ampoules

  • A stumble in the garden that leaves a bruised hip or forearm. Contusions and bruising of soft tissues are on the label.
  • An overdone day: a long walk, a day at the allotment or a morning of decorating, followed by sore muscles.
  • A flare in a familiar joint, such as a knee, hip or the small joints of the hands. The label mentions arthrosis of the hip, knee and small joints.
  • Tender shoulders and elbows after lifting grandchildren or golf. See tendon and ligament niggles.

These are traditional homeopathic uses, not claims that the ampoules will cure or treat any condition. For wear-related joint complaints that are persistent, the pairing with Zeel is often discussed (see Traumeel and Zeel together).

Falls and knocks need checking

After a fall, the first job is to be sure nothing is broken and no head injury has occurred. Older adults, and anyone on blood thinners, should get checked after any significant fall, even if they feel fine, particularly after a knock to the head. A remedy is not a substitute for that check. Our guide to sprains, strains and bruises lists the warning signs.

How ampoules are taken

The label directions: break the ampoule at the marker, tap it into a glass of water and take it with water over 15 to 20 minutes, outside of food. The 10 x 2.2 ml page gives a normal dosage of one ampoule every three days and one a day in acute disorders. Other methods of use, including injection (i.m., s.c., i.d., i.v.), are for trained individuals, e.g. practitioners. A pharmacist or practitioner can tell you how it fits with your other medicines. See taking ampoules by mouth.

Practical points for older users

  • Opening glass with stiff hands. If arthritis makes snapping an ampoule difficult, ask a family member for help, use a tissue for grip, or consider a plastic ampoule breaker. Alternatively, the tablets or drops may suit you better. See which form.
  • Eyesight. Read the marker and expiry date in good light, or use a magnifier.
  • Keep a list. Write down every medicine and remedy you take. Take the list to appointments.
  • Safe disposal. Put empties in a lidded jar.
  • Keep out of reach of visiting grandchildren and pets. See storage and opening.

Medicines and conditions to mention

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about homeopathic remedies just as you would about any other medicine, especially if you take blood thinners, medicines for blood pressure, diabetes or heart conditions, or are preparing for an operation. Our article Traumeel with other medicines explains why.

Staying active

The best things for joints are the unglamorous ones: regular gentle movement, strength work, a healthy weight, good footwear and enough sleep. Walking, swimming, tai chi and cycling are popular. If a joint is hot, red and swollen, or pain is severe or worsening, see a doctor. Our general guide natural remedies for osteoarthritis and joint pain has more.

Which box?

A box of 10 is a good start. Couples who both use ampoules sometimes prefer the box of 100. See which box.
