What Is Mucosa Compositum? Heel Ampoules Explained

Educational information on traditional homeopathic use only. Not medical advice.

Mucosa compositum (often searched as "Mucosa compositum Heel") is one of the most wide-ranging combination ampoules in the Heel range. The name tells you the theme: mucosa means the mucous membranes that line the nose, mouth, airways, gut, bladder and eyes. This guide explains what is in it, how it is traditionally used and how it differs from other remedies with a similar name.

What is Mucosa compositum?

It is a homeopathic combination solution supplied in 2.2 ml ampoules. The indications printed on our product page describe stimulating the body's own defences in diseases of the mucous membranes and catarrhs of various types and locations, for example in the digestive tract, in the upper and lower airways, the urinary passages and the conjunctiva of the eye. Because it covers so many sites, it is typically a practitioner's remedy rather than a quick first choice for one symptom.

The ingredients, grouped

The formula has 36 components, each at 22 microlitres per ampoule.

  • Mucous-membrane organ preparations (porcine, all D8): nasal, oral, lung, eye, gall bladder, bladder, pylorus, duodenum, oesophagus, jejunum, ileum, colon, rectum and bile-duct mucosa, plus stomach (Ventriculus suis D8) and pancreas (Pankreas suis D10). This is the distinctive part of the formula, and it means the product is not suitable for people who avoid animal-derived ingredients.
  • Minerals and metals: Argentum nitricum D6, Kalium bichromicum D8, Natrium diethyloxalaceticum D8, Phosphorus D8, Sulfur D8.
  • Plants: Atropa belladonna D10, Oxalis acetosella D6, Semecarpus anacardium D6, Ipecacuanha D8, Nux vomica D13, Veratrum album D4, Pulsatilla pratensis D6, Marsdenia cundurango D6, Hydrastis canadensis D4, Mandragora D10, Momordica balsamina D6, Ceanothus americanus D4.
  • Others: Lachesis mutus D10 (snake venom preparation), Kreosotum D10 and Bacterium coli-Nosode D28.

Pack sizes and dosage

Our page offers a box of 10 ampoules, a box of 100 and a bulk option of three boxes of 100. The directions read: in acute disorders daily, otherwise 3 to 1 times weekly, 1 ampoule. The page lists no known contraindications and no interactions with other medication. It does note that, in rare cases, skin reactions may occur, and that a therapist should then be consulted.

Other methods of use, including injection (i.m., s.c., i.d., i.v.), are for trained individuals, e.g. practitioners.

Which Mucosa product is which?

Several products share part of the name, which is a frequent source of confusion.

  • Mucosa compositum (this article): the broad, multi-site combination.
  • Mucosa nasalis suis-Injeel: a single-organ preparation aimed at the nasal lining only.
  • Sanum Mucokehl: an unrelated Sanum isopathic remedy made from the mould Mucor racemosus. See our Mucokehl guide.
  • The 5 ml ampoules listed for horses on our site are a separate veterinary-style listing; use the 2.2 ml product for people.

Who might consider it?

Practitioners traditionally consider it where the mucous membranes seem to be the common thread: people with recurrent catarrh, sensitive digestion and repeated irritation in more than one area. It is rarely used by someone who just has a single cold.

Cautions

  • Persistent blood in stools, ongoing indigestion with weight loss, or recurrent urinary symptoms need medical assessment.
  • Stop and speak to a practitioner if a skin reaction appears.
  • Ask your practitioner before use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or in children.
