What Is Oteel? Traumeel Ear Drops Explained

Educational information on traditional homeopathic use only. Not medical advice.

Oteel is the ear drop version of the Traumeel family. Parents in particular look it up when a child has an uncomfortable ear and they would like to know what a gentle, non-antibiotic option looks like. This guide explains what is in the vials, how they are used according to the directions on our page, and, importantly, when an ear problem should be seen by a doctor instead.

What is Oteel?

Oteel is a homeopathic ear drop supplied as ten sterile single-dose vials of 0.45 ml each. The product page describes it as being for the ear passageway, earache and ear complaints. It is made by combining the well-known Traumeel plant ingredients with several others traditionally associated with ear and throat tissue. It is for external use only, in the outer ear canal.

Oteel is a homeopathic product, not an antibiotic and not a pain-relief medicine. It should not be used as a reason to delay seeing a doctor when an ear infection is suspected.

The 14 ingredients

The composition on our page lists: Arnica montana radix D2, Calendula officinalis D2, Chamomilla D3, Symphytum officinale D6, Millefolium D3, Belladonna D2, Aconitum napellus D2, Bellis perennis D2, Hypericum perforatum D2, Echinacea D2, Echinacea purpurea D2, Hamamelis virginiana D1, Mercurius solubilis D6 and Hepar sulphur D6.

  • Most of the plants (Arnica, Calendula, Millefolium, Bellis, Hypericum, Hamamelis, Symphytum) will be familiar if you know Traumeel. They are the traditional "bruised or sore tissue" group.
  • Chamomilla is a classic children's remedy in homeopathy.
  • Echinacea and Echinacea purpurea are the traditional immune-linked herbs.
  • Belladonna, Aconitum, Mercurius solubilis and Hepar sulphur are traditionally used where there is heat, sensitivity or a feeling of inflammation.

How the vials are used

The directions on our page, in summary:

  1. Bring the vial to body temperature by holding it in the palm of your hand for about one minute.
  2. Unscrew the top part just before use.
  3. Gently press the vial and let the liquid drip into the ear canal, with the head held sideways for a while so that it can run in properly.
  4. One vial is enough for one application, in the left and/or right ear. Do not store opened vials.

Drops by age, as printed

  • Adults, and adolescents 12 to 18: 3 to 4 drops into the affected ear, 4 times a day.
  • Children 6 to 11: 3 drops into the affected ear, 4 times a day.
  • Children 2 to 5: 2 drops into the affected ear, 4 times a day.
  • Children under 2: 1 to 2 drops into the affected ear, 4 times a day.

For babies and toddlers, always speak to a doctor or pharmacist first, because ear pain in a very young child needs to be assessed.

When to see a doctor straight away

  • Ear pain with a fever, especially in a child under 2 or an infant.
  • Discharge from the ear, blood, or a sudden loss of hearing.
  • A known or suspected perforated eardrum, or grommets. Ear drops of any kind should not be used unless a doctor has said they are safe.
  • Swelling or redness behind the ear, severe pain, or a child who seems unusually unwell.

Antibiotics and other licensed medicines are sometimes necessary for ear infections, and a homeopathic ear drop is not a like-for-like substitute for them.

Oteel compared with other Traumeel forms

Oteel is the only ear-specific format. For other uses of the family, see Traumeel S ampoules and Traumeel tablets. They are not designed for the ear.
