Ask where a disease actually happens and most of us picture the affected organ — an inflamed joint, a congested sinus, a struggling liver. Homotoxicology answers differently. Long before any organ fails, the decisive events take place in the fluid, sieve-like tissue that surrounds every cell in the body: the connective-tissue matrix.
Keep that matrix clean and responsive and the organism can defend and repair itself. Let it silt up with accumulated toxins and even the best-chosen remedy struggles to reach its target. This is why drainage and detoxification sit at the very foundation of antihomotoxic therapy.
In this article we look at the ground itself, at the phase in which it becomes overloaded, and at three preparations built to clear it — Lymphomyosot, Galium-Heel and Nux-Vomica Homaccord. If you are new to the model, our opening article on the Reckeweg model sets the scene.
The ground where health is decided
Reckeweg placed the contest between the body and its toxins not inside the cell but in the ground regulation system — the extracellular matrix together with its superimposed nervous, hormonal and humoral controls. The ground substance forms, in the compendium's words, ‘a molecular sieve of matrix components such as highly polymerised sugar protein complexes and sugar complexes (proteoglycans-glycosaminoglycans, PG/GAGs), structural proteins (collagen, elastin) and meshing glycoproteins’ (Biotherapeutic Index, §1.1.5).
Those PG/GAGs are electro-negatively charged, so they bind water and exchange ions; they are, as the text puts it, ‘the guarantors for isoiony, isoosmy, and isotony in the matrix’ (§1.1.5). Every cell is fed, drained and signalled through this medium. Crucially, ‘the cells can only react as they have been informed via the extracellular space’ — and the metabolically active centre coordinating it all is the fibroblast, which ‘does not differentiate between “good” or “bad” information’ and simply synthesises matrix in response to whatever arrives.
That indifference is the vulnerability. Because the matrix connects to the endocrine system through the capillaries and to the central nervous system through the autonomic axons, a local surplus or deficit can propagate into a self-reinforcing circulus vitiosus (§1.1.5).
The deposition phase: when the ground silts up
In Reckeweg's six-phase table — explored in detail in our article on how illness progresses — the third phase is the deposition phase. Here a homotoxin that the body could not fully excrete is ‘simply encapsulated and taken out of circulation.’ This ‘always occurs when the homotoxins can no longer be degraded by the body in the reaction phase’ (Biotherapeutic Index, §2).
For a while this is a workable compromise: ‘as long as the physiological filtering and protection functions can be performed by the matrix, the regular supply of the surrounding parenchyma cells and tissue is guaranteed.’ The picture changes only when deposits accumulate to the point that the matrix ‘can no longer perform its filtering and protection functions’ — at which stage homotoxins finally reach the cell and begin to damage organelles such as the mitochondria and nucleus.
‘Due to the sieve-like as well as connective properties of the PG/GAGs, the danger of slagging of the matrix also exists through the development of a latent tissue acidity, increase of free radicals, and the activation of the proteolytic system turning into a pro-inflammatory situation.’ — Biotherapeutic Index, §1.1.5
A ‘slagged’ matrix, then, is not merely dirty — it is chemically primed for chronic inflammation and degeneration. Clearing it is the pre-condition for everything else.
Why drainage comes first
This is the practical heart of the matter. The compendium's structured programmes begin not with immune stimulation but with the ground: ‘the therapy commences with a pure excretion and detoxification therapy for the duration of several weeks.’ Only afterwards — ‘after completion of the excretion and detoxification therapy’ — is an ‘immunostimulating/immunomodulating therapy’ commenced (Biotherapeutic Index, §6).
The logic is straightforward. A remedy meant to stimulate defence, regenerate an organ or unblock an enzyme must act through the matrix. If that channel is congested, the signal is muffled and reactions can be excessive or unpredictable. Draining first lowers the toxin load, restores the flow, and lets subsequent therapy land cleanly — which is exactly why drainage remedies are so often prescribed as running companions to more specific preparations.
Lymphomyosot: draining the lymph and connective tissue
Lymphomyosot is the compendium's principal lymphatic and mesenchymal drainage remedy — a broad combination built around Scrophularia nodosa, Juglans regia, Ferrum iodatum and Myosotis arvensis, among others. Its stated indications are ‘status lymphaticus (tendency to hypertrophy of the lymphatic organs; tendency to formation of oedemas and to susceptibility to infections); glandular swelling; tonsillar hypertrophy; chronic tonsillitis’ (Biotherapeutic Index, ‘Lymphomyosot’).
What matters for our purpose is its role as an ‘important detoxicating and drainage agent in all impregnation, degeneration and neoplasm phases … as mesenchymal purge’ (‘Lymphomyosot’). By improving lymphatic return and the fluid economy of the connective tissue, it helps carry deposited homotoxins out of the ground and towards the organs of elimination. It works, in other words, at the level of fluid and matrix — draining the terrain rather than acting on any single cell.
Galium-Heel: from matrix into the cell
Where Lymphomyosot governs the lymph and interstitial fluid, Galium-Heel reaches deeper. Its indication is ‘to activate the non-specific defensive mechanism, particularly in chronic diseases,’ and it is directed especially at ‘all phases with enzyme damage on the right of the biological division’ (Biotherapeutic Index, ‘Galium-Heel’).
The mechanism the compendium describes is a two-level one: ‘Galium-Heel acts inductively on detoxicating intracellular enzyme systems; further, through the stimulation of the main defensive system, thereby promoting detoxicating and secretory reactions and leading, in particular, to a strengthening of the function of the connective tissues.’ In short, it targets the cell and its enzymes as well as the surrounding matrix — the complement to Lymphomyosot's fluid-level action. Fittingly, the two are named together throughout the text as the paired ‘excretive, matrix-channeling’ remedies.
Because Galium-Heel works on intracellular detoxifying enzymes, the compendium recommends supporting it with ‘intermediate catalysts of the citric acid cycle’ — the cellular-energy remedies we examine in our article on catalysts and cellular energy. Drainage and cellular re-activation are, in practice, two halves of one movement.
Nux-Vomica Homaccord and the Detox Kit
Clearing the matrix only helps if the body's excretory routes — chiefly the liver and intestine — are open. This is the job of Nux-Vomica Homaccord, a Nux vomica, Bryonia, Lycopodium and Colocynthis formula for ‘functional disorders in the gastro-intestinal and hepatic region’ and ‘disorders after consumption of alcohol, coffee or nicotine’ (Biotherapeutic Index, ‘Nux vomica-Homaccord’).
The compendium is explicit about sequencing: Nux vomica-Homaccord is given so that ‘when starting antihomotoxic treatment, the toxin level can first be lowered by improving the hepatic and intestinal function,’ frequently ‘in combination with Galium-Heel, Lymphomyosot’ (‘Nux vomica-Homaccord’). Open the exits first, then drain the ground.
These three actions come together in a single structured programme. The compendium's excretion-and-detoxification plan pairs Lymphomyosot with Nux vomica-Homaccord and Berberis-Homaccord, taken together over several weeks (Biotherapeutic Index, §6.2.1) — precisely the combined lymph, liver and kidney drainage offered by the Detox Kit. It is the tidy, everyday expression of a deep principle: clean the ground before you build on it.
