Educational information on traditional homeopathic use only. Not medical advice. Eno and Digene are over-the-counter antacids; the remedies below are not like-for-like substitutes for them.
"Eno vs Digene" is a comparison many people search when heartburn or a sour stomach strikes. This guide explains what each is generally used for, why you might want an alternative, and the traditional homeopathic products we stock for heartburn, bloating and stomach upsets. It is not a recommendation to choose one antacid over another; a pharmacist can help with that.

Eno and Digene: what are they?
- Eno is a fizzing fruit-salt powder that is dissolved in water and drunk, sold for acidity, heartburn and indigestion.
- Digene is an antacid sold as tablets, gel or liquid, also for acidity, heartburn, and sometimes wind.
Both are over-the-counter products that neutralise stomach acid for short-term relief. The exact ingredients and warnings differ by country and version, so read the pack. Some contain sodium or aluminium and may not suit people with kidney problems, high blood pressure or those on a low-salt diet. A pharmacist can tell you which suits you; we do not compare them medically.
Why do people look for alternatives?
- heartburn that returns several times a week
- not liking the fizz, the taste or the chalky texture
- concern about sodium, or about relying on antacids
- wanting to look at triggers as well as the symptom
See a doctor if
Heartburn most days, trouble or pain when swallowing, vomiting, black stools, weight loss, anaemia, or chest pain that spreads to the arm or jaw need prompt medical advice (call emergency services for chest pain with breathlessness or sweating). Seek advice before using antacids regularly if you are pregnant or take other medicines.
Everyday measures people often use
- smaller evening meals, eaten at least two to three hours before lying down
- raising the head of the bed slightly
- keeping a short diary of triggers, such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate, spicy or fatty foods
- avoiding tight clothing around the waist
- stopping smoking and moderating alcohol
- sipping water and chewing slowly

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Eno or Digene?
Neither is better for everyone. They are different formats of antacid. Ask a pharmacist which suits you, especially if you have kidney or heart problems.
Is there a natural alternative to Eno?
Smaller meals, avoiding triggers and sleeping with the head raised are everyday steps. Gastricumeel is a traditional homeopathic option, though not equivalent.
Can I use Gastricumeel instead of Digene?
We cannot advise replacing a recommended medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
What helps heartburn at night?
Eating earlier and raising the head of the bed help many people. See our Gaviscon alternatives guide.
