Natural Remedies for Diarrhoea and IBS

Natural Remedy Guides

Loose, urgent stools, griping cramps, bloating and the unpredictable bowel of irritable bowel syndrome can dominate daily life. This guide explains how the antihomotoxic approach steadies the gut without simply shutting it down, and which Heel remedies do what.

Understanding diarrhoea and IBS

One principle sits at the heart of the antihomotoxic approach to loose stools. As the compendium states plainly, diarrhoea ‘is in general an advantageous excretion phase and should not be retoxically inhibited’ — in other words, the body is clearing something, and the aim is to support and complete that clearance rather than block it (Biotherapeutic Index, Therapeutic Index, ‘Diarrhoea’).

Longer-standing, irritable-bowel-type problems are read differently again: the compendium places colitis in the entodermal impregnation or reaction phase, with Nux-Vomica Homaccord as its main remedy, reflecting the mix of inflammation, spasm and disturbed function that characterises an unsettled, over-reactive gut.

The antihomotoxic approach

Diarrheel S leads for acute and chronic diarrhoea. The compendium indicates it for ‘acute and chronic diarrhoea, gastroenteritis’ and, more broadly, ‘in all cases of gastro-intestinal dysfunction, especially when the faeces are diarrhoeic’, covering dyspepsia, meteorism and dysentery. For watery, acute upset it is classically alternated with Veratrum-Homaccord — the two given ‘in one to two-hourly alternation until there is an improvement’.

Where symptoms resemble dysentery — with mucus or blood — Mercurius-Heel is used. For irritable, colitic bowels the compendium builds around Nux-Vomica Homaccord — the main remedy for colitis, enterospasms and the alternating spasm and sluggishness of a disturbed gut — supported by Galium-Heel as a detoxicating agent and Spascupreel for intestinal colic and cramp.

Recommended remedies

The remedies the compendium names for diarrhoea and irritable bowel:

  • Diarrheel S — the mainstay for acute and chronic diarrhoea and gastroenteritis, and for dyspepsia and meteorism.
  • Nux-Vomica Homaccord — the main remedy for colitis and enterospasm, and for the irritable bowel that alternates between spasm and looseness.
  • Veratrum-Homaccord — for acute, watery gastroenteritis with colic and a tendency to collapse; alternated hourly with Diarrheel S.
  • Mercurius-Heel — for dysentery-like symptoms with mucus or blood.
  • Galium-Heel — as a detoxicating agent in colitis and chronic bowel irritation.
  • Spascupreel — for intestinal colic, cramp and the griping pain of an irritable bowel.

How to use them

For everyday use, Diarrheel S is one tablet dissolved under the tongue three times daily. In an acute attack it can be used with massive initial-dose therapy — up to five tablets every 10–30 minutes — easing back as the bowel settles. The compendium also suggests taking ordinary medicinal charcoal several times a day to bind toxins, waiting at least 30 minutes after the Diarrheel S before the charcoal.

For acute, watery diarrhoea, alternate Diarrheel S with Veratrum-Homaccord every one to two hours until things improve. For irritable, colitic bowels a steadier daily rhythm suits better: Nux-Vomica Homaccord 8–10 drops at 8 a.m., 12 noon and 4 p.m., Galium-Heel at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and Mercurius-Heel at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., with Spascupreel added for cramp.

Because loose stools are, in this model, a helpful excretion phase, the goal is to support the clearance rather than suppress it. For chronic or recurrent bowel trouble the compendium describes practitioner-led after-treatment, for example Mucosa compositum to regulate the mucous membranes, with Hepar compositum to support the detoxicating hepatic function.
