The GUNA Method Therapeutic Triangle: PNEI Rebalance, Drainage and Symptom Treatment

Part 2 of a two-part Deep GUNA Research series on the GUNA Method itself, for practitioners.

Part 1 of this series set out the theory behind the GUNA Method — the matrix, the vessel-matrix-membrane receptor unit, receptor down-regulation, and the low-dose mechanism that underpins every product in GUNA's range. This article covers how GUNA translates that theory into a working clinical model: the Therapeutic Triangle, and the specific product ranges GUNA attaches to each of its three phases.

A Linear, Three-Phase Model

GUNA describes the clinical-therapeutic model of Physiological Regulating Medicine as linear. "Our approach to treating patients can thus be regarded as a global strategy in which nervous system, endocrine system and immune system communicate and cooperate with one another, and where any intervention in one of the systems will have an effect on all of the others." Medicines can be chosen to work on individual targets — a primary or secondary pathology focus — while simultaneously affecting the bidirectionally-linked targets around it. GUNA calls this "fine regulation" — treatment via hormones, neuropeptides and cytokines at homeopathic (low) doses, intended to complement rather than replace matrix-drainage homeopathic remedies.

Therapeutic planning under the GUNA Method includes three phases, forming what GUNA calls the PRM Therapeutic Triangle:

1. Rebalance the PNEI
2. Drainage
3. Symptom Treatment

Phase 1: PNEI Rebalance

Reprogramming the neuro-immune-endocrine axis — in both directions, psychosomatic and somatopsychic — is, in GUNA's account, the core of Physiological Regulating Therapy. This phase combines homeopathic micro-doses of cytokines, hormones and neurotransmitters (at the same concentration as the physiological milieu) with selected classical homeopathic remedies of plant, mineral or animal origin, to reduce, modulate or stimulate the reactivity of the three main regulatory systems — nervous, immune, endocrine — without suppressing or inhibiting the body's own biological response.

Different combinations are indicated depending on whether the alteration is general endocrine, neuro-endocrine, or immune-endocrine in nature:

Phase 2: Drainage

A detoxified, drained extra-cellular matrix is what allows a cell to actually receive oxygen and nutrients, and allows its receptors to be adequately activated by the relation molecules described in Part 1. A detoxified, drained cell can, in turn, perform its own metabolic function properly. GUNA's drainage strategy works at three levels simultaneously:

• Emunctory drainage — strengthening the physiological excretory and toxin-release function of the emunctory organs: Guna Liver Plus, Guna Bowel, Guna Kidney.
• Matrix detoxification — Guna Matrix, Guna Lympho.
• Cellular detoxification — Guna Cell.

GUNA's own framing of the importance of this phase is blunt: "good drainage is already halfway to good therapy." Combined cellular, matrix and emunctorial drainage is, on its own, often a complete and efficacious detox strategy.

A clinical assessment of the state of intoxication is meant to precede drug selection, and GUNA sets out three intoxication stages, each with its own recommended combination:

All three stages converge, in GUNA's model, on drainage of a parallel organ — good hepatic functionality via Guna Liver Plus, good intestinal functionality via Guna Bowel, and good renal functionality via Guna Kidney.

Phase 3: Symptom Treatment

The final phase targets the presenting symptom itself. Interleukins, neurotransmitters, homeopathic hormones and classical homeopathic remedies act in concert on inflammatory disease, with remedies chosen to target specific evolutionary phases of the inflammatory process — modulating the four classical signs of inflammation, calor, dolor, rubor et tumor (heat, pain, redness and swelling).

GUNA traces this back to a combination of homeopathic tradition and molecular biology research: the working hypothesis is that homeopathic micro-doses of immune-response molecules can reactivate an adequate biological immune response — at physiological-milieu concentrations — modulating inflammation and, GUNA argues, leading to fuller recovery and reduced prognosis time. Which medications are chosen for this phase depends on the prevalent presenting symptoms, and they're selected to be used alongside — not instead of — the PNEI rebalance and drainage phases already underway.

Reading the Triangle as a Whole

Taken together, the three phases aren't sequential steps to complete and abandon in turn — GUNA's own language throughout is of concurrent, cooperating interventions across the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. A PNEI rebalance product is very often prescribed alongside a drainage remedy and a symptom-targeted remedy in the same protocol, with the drainage phase in particular treated as a precondition for the other two working properly: an intoxicated matrix, as Part 1 of this series covered, is what blocks the passage of the very molecules PNEI rebalance therapy is built around.
