Albicansan and the Candida Question: Treating Fungal Overgrowth Isopathically

Few organisms illustrate Enderlein's pleomorphism thesis more vividly than Candida albicans. It is, quite literally, living proof of the theory: a single species capable of existing in more than one growth form, switching between them according to conditions, and — crucially for how it is treated — doing real damage only once it makes that switch.

A Living Demonstration of Dimorphism

Candida yeasts are saprophytic by nature — they live on organic matter without necessarily causing harm — and only become pathogenic under certain preconditions. A weakened immune system, or a course of antibiotics, promotes the pathogenicity of Candida yeast cells enormously, and it is this shift that lies behind the far-spreading candidiasis so often seen as a superficial colonisation of mucous membranes.

The mechanism is worth understanding in detail, because it explains why isopathic treatment is structured the way it is. In its yeast form, the microorganism exists as a single cell — relatively contained, relatively low risk. But if the host cell it has colonised dies, the yeast cell comes into contact with the dissolving cell fragments and cell fluid released in the process. This contact is, in effect, the signal for the yeast cell to rise within the cyclogenetic series into a parasitic, mycelia-forming fungus — one that then grows invasively into the surrounding tissue, initiating the widening of tissue lesions that characterises more serious candidiasis. Researchers have successfully cultivated the organism as both yeast phase and fungal phase side by side under appropriate cultivation conditions, confirming that this is a single organism moving between forms, not two separate infections.

Albicansan: Built for Every Depth of Infection

Albicansan® holds a special position among the isopathic preparations because its active substance — Chondritins of Candida albicans in a range of homeopathic dilutions — is matched directly to this dimorphic behaviour. Because it addresses the organism across its developmental range, Albicansan is considered suitable for the superficial, mucous-membrane-associated forms of candidiasis as well as for deeper-settled, tissue-infiltrating infections, and even for the more extensive intestinal mucosal forms of the condition.

This breadth is reflected in how the remedy is supplied: as drops for oral or topical use, as an ointment for direct application, as capsules, and as suppositories — allowing a practitioner to match the form of the preparation to where the fungal overgrowth actually sits, whether that is systemic, intestinal, or localised to the skin or mucosa.

Two Complementary Preparations

Albicansan is not used in isolation. Exmykehl® broadens the picture by representing a combination of Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis and Penicillium roquefortii together, useful where more than one organism appears to be involved. And Pefrakehl®, drawn from the yeast form of Candida parapsilosis, is a well-proven, closely related preparation available for candidiasis therapy — including, notably, through a cross-antigen reaction that makes it effective against superficial Candida albicans infections too. Candida parapsilosis itself is predominantly isolated from the skin, from nail bed infections, from otitis externa, and from endocarditis in humans, which gives Pefrakehl a particular relevance where those presentations are involved.

For a more targeted, single-organism approach at the antigen level, the range also includes Sanukehl® Cand — a Hapten preparation made specifically from Candida albicans of serotypes A and B. We look closely at how the Sanukehl haptenic approach differs from the Chondritin approach later in this series, but it is worth flagging here as a further option in the Candida toolkit.

Supporting the Terrain, Not Just Targeting the Organism

Consistent with the wider SANUM philosophy explored in earlier articles, treatment of candidiasis in this tradition is never approached as a matter of the remedy alone. The acid-base equilibrium of the body is considered central to whether Candida tends toward its harmless yeast form or its invasive fungal one, which is why preparations supporting deacidification — covered in detail in the next article — are so often paired alongside Albicansan and its companion remedies. Nutritional change matters here too: a diet low in sugar and refined flour, and rich in vital nutrients, is considered foundational, since these are exactly the conditions under which Candida tends to remain in its quieter, saprophytic state.

As with all isopathic preparations, dosage is adapted to the individual's response over the course of treatment, with the aim of supporting the body's own capacity to bring an overgrown, dimorphic organism like Candida back down into its harmless, single-celled form — rather than attempting to eliminate it outright.
