Natural Remedies for Back Pain and Sciatica

Natural Remedy Guides

Few things stop you in your tracks like a seized lower back, or the electric, radiating pain of sciatica travelling down the leg. Whether it arrives suddenly after lifting or builds over years of stiffness, the pattern is the same: irritated nerves, tight protective muscle spasm, and a spine that no longer wants to move.

This guide explains how the antihomotoxic approach addresses lumbago and sciatica, and which Heel remedies the Biotherapeutic Index recommends to calm the spasm, ease the nerve pain and support the spine.

Understanding back pain and sciatica

Low back pain and sciatica are, at heart, disorders of the nerves and muscles around the lumbar spine. In the homotoxicology framework lumbago is placed in the neurodermal or sympathicodermal reaction or impregnation phase — an irritation of the nerve and soft-tissue tracts of the back rather than simple structural damage (Biotherapeutic Index, Therapeutic Index, 'Lumbago (low back pain)').

Sciatica is the same picture radiating along the sciatic nerve, and the compendium treats it alongside intercostal neuralgia and osteochondrosis of the spine. The strategy, then, is twofold: settle the acute spasm and nerve pain, and support the vertebral column and discs so the problem is less likely to return.

The antihomotoxic approach

For the acute, seized back the compendium leans on Spascupreel for the pain and muscle spasm — '1 tablet to be dissolved on the tongue every 10 minutes' in the thick of an attack — supported by Ranunculus-Homaccord and Cimicifuga-Homaccord for the radiating and intervertebral pains. Where an inflamed, flaring joint or facet is part of the picture, Traumeel S is added; where there is accompanying wear-and-tear of the spinal joints, Zeel (tablets or ointment).

For the longer game, the Index names Discus compositum as its remedy for 'disorders of the vertebral column, bones and tendons', given once weekly by a practitioner. It adds Berberis-Homaccord for lumbago-like pain in the kidney and suprarenal region (particularly on the left), and Aesculus compositum to stimulate the local circulation.

Recommended remedies

The remedies the compendium names for the lumbar and sciatic picture:

  • Spascupreel — for the muscle spasm and pain of an acute back; taken very frequently in the thick of an attack.
  • Ranunculus-Homaccord and Cimicifuga-Homaccord — for radiating and intervertebral pains.
  • Discus compositum — the long-term remedy for the vertebral column, discs, bones and tendons.
  • Traumeel S — for an inflamed, flaring facet or joint contributing to the pain.
  • Zeel — where wear-and-tear of the spinal joints accompanies the back pain.
  • Berberis-Homaccord — for lumbago-like pain in the kidney and suprarenal region, especially on the left.
  • Aesculus compositum — to stimulate the local circulation.
  • Neuralgo-Rheum-Injeel — the compendium's segmental nerve remedy for sciatic pain, used by practitioners intradermally in the region of the pain.

How to use them

In an acute attack the compendium uses Spascupreel intensively — one tablet dissolved on the tongue every 10 minutes until the spasm eases — with Ranunculus-Homaccord and Cimicifuga-Homaccord at 8-10 drops, all three taken together two to six times daily. Traumeel S ointment or Zeel T ointment can be massaged into the tight, hardened muscles alongside.

Once the acute phase settles, the emphasis shifts to the spine itself: Discus compositum is given by a practitioner once weekly for long-term support of the vertebral column and discs, and for sciatic pain Neuralgo-Rheum-Injeel is placed intradermally, segmentally, in the region of the pain. Aesculus compositum supports the circulation through recovery.
